We aim to provide the children with a smooth transition from EYFS to KS1.
Childhood
In the Childhood project, your child will learn words and phrases related to the passage of time. They will explore artefacts to help them to understand childhood in the past and how childhood has changed over time. They will explore the six stages of life and explore timelines and family trees. Everyday life in the 1950s will be explored, including shopping, transport, family life and childhood. They will also learn about the significance of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953 by studying photographs and online sources. The children will use maps to explore how places have changed over time and highlight any similarities or differences between childhood today and childhood in the 1950s. At the end of the project, they will create knowledge organisers for children who are about to study the topic of childhood.
A topic web will be sent home with more detail about what is being taught in each subject.
Bright Lights, Big City
In this geography driver topic, your child will build on the geographical skills and knowledge introduced in term 1 and 2’s geography topics. Your child will learn about different types of landmarks and where they can be found in the world.
They will revisit the map of the United Kingdom and identify its four countries, their capital cities and explore the surrounding seas and oceans. They will also continue to consolidate their understanding of a ‘physical feature’ and will look in to more details of examples in the United Kingdom. Your child will be reintroduced to urban landscapes. They will explore cities and look at the ‘human features’ within these which allow large amounts of people to live and work within them. In particular they will look at the city of London and explore it’s significant monuments, buildings and bridges. Lastly, your child will use their knowledge to make comparisons with the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
School Days
In this History driver project, your child will extend their vocabulary of time and will explore how each word can describe a length of time or how long ago something happened.
Your child will be introduced to the history of Westfield School, within living memory. We will look at school artefacts including photographs and other historical sources. They will use information from their deductions to create a timeline of the schools history and put this in chronological order.
Later in the term, your child will be introduced to the Victorian era and will learn about life as a child in this time period. They will take part in role play activities where they will become a Victorian school child. From this immersive experience, your child will compare this experience to modern day school life. Lastly, we will learn about the life and legacy of Samuel Wilderspin, who changed how young children were taught.
Home Learning Expectations
Reading
Children should read at home 5 times a week with an adult. Children will bring home two reading books; one will be a book they are reading in their phonics group and the second will be a book which is matched to their coloured reading level. Please fill in their reading record each time they have read with you at home so they can gain rewards (raffle tickets and class trophies). Please ensure your child’s reading record and books are brought into school every day.
A message from Miss Hamilton…
PE is taught on a Wednesday morning and a Thursday afternoon. Children will need to come to school in their school PE kit on these days. PE lessons will take place outside as often as possible and so please ensure children are dressed appropriately for the weather that day.
In order to help your child to stay hydrated and ready to learn, please make sure that they bring a labelled water bottle to school with them every day. We kindly ask that bottles are filled with water only – rather than juices or squash.
If your child has recently achieved something, made something at home or has something that relates to our current learning, please encourage them to come into school and talk about it. We will always do our best to make time to foster the links between home and school based learning.
